In 2024, Zoe Therapy Services celebrates 10 years in service of meeting the mental health and wellness needs of our community. The name “Zoe” comes from the Greek word for “abundant, soulful life” – which seems to me to be the point of existence. I envisioned Zoe as a place where people remove their barriers and find the tools to sustain this full life. I developed our motto of “Discover. Practice. Thrive!” from the research on consciousness transformation conducted by the Institute of Noetic Sciences. When people discover the root cause of problems and practice helpful skills, they thrive.

After spending 26 years in private practice, acute care, and residential treatment care systems, I knew that people often need more than talk therapy. Inspired by the work of Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk, an internationally known psychiatrist, researcher of the impact of trauma on the human experience, and author of The Body Keeps the Score, I wanted to offer people the total package of mind/body/spirit/community resources for complete health. I envisioned a small group of psychotherapists, a psychiatric prescriber, and a bodyworker coming together to support clients. I did not imagine 3 locations and over 50 providers and administrators working on this dream! Apparently, Zoe Therapy Services has developed a life of its own and I’m just along for the ride!

Over the past 10 years, I experimented with a variety of offerings to support physical health alongside mental health. These include massage, acupuncture, Alexander Technique, Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields (PEMF), and neurofeedback. We tried to connect clients with other providers in the Richmond community by launching the podcast, LivDen. Each of these was valuable but none of them gained much traction.

Then, our gifted nutritionist, Julie Barbaro, joined us. More of our clients recognized the gut/brain connection. Julie introduced me to Dr. Shruthi Chandrashekhar, who educated me about Lifestyle Medicine. I knew as soon as I learned about Lifestyle Medicine’s 6 Pillars of Health (sleep, nutrition, movement, relationships, stress management, avoiding substance misuse), that this was the missing link to the original vision – and that Zoe Therapy Services was uniquely equipped to deliver this in combination with our mental health services.

We launched ZoeStyle Medicine in January 2023. Listening closely to our patients, we are developing service and payment models that meet their needs.

The combination of Zoe Therapy Services and ZoeStyle Medicine is ZoeRVA. Over the next 10 years, we will continue to fulfill our original vision of saving you time, money, and energy from running all over town trying to get your mental and physical health needs met by offering you one place that equips you to develop a better mood, better health, and better relationships.
